The Kind of Flag I Would Make

July 2022

The Kind of Flag I Would Make seeks to answer the question “What is queer joy?”, using the symbolism for each colour of the original pride flag designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978 as a guiding parameter for enquiry.

These symbolisms - art, spirit, healing, nature, sunlight, sex, life, and serenity - have led us to uncover how joy radiates throughout these aspects of the queer experience, across both historically informed and personally connected topics.

With significant inspiration from zines - small-scale, self-published works that provide a platform for independent expression - The Kind of Flag I Would Make embraces the physical and grass-root quality of the making process in our own manifestation of the beauty, love, and happiness that floods the LGBTQIA+ community.
